ANCIENT SHIP AND ANCIENT SCENT

FROM OLD TO NEW WORLDS

We have America’s largest collection of Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) logs at the Phoenicia Workshop in Iowa. We have distilled and formulated an ancient scent from the essential oil that comes from our Cedar of Lebanon. The perfume provides a source of funding for the restoration of our ship replica for the next two years.

We sell MELEK, Ancient Scent 600 BC to our friends and supporters. The fundraising is patterned in the way that Boy Scouts sell popcorn to raise money for their local programs. In stead of popcorn, we package and sell perfume.

Create a Memory.

Connect to the Bible.

Ancient Formulation.

Cedar of Lebanon is the rarest of essences, so it is never found in commercial perfumery. A devotional oil of sacred nature and supreme beauty. It was the dominant scent in the House of the Lord as constructed by King Solomon and King Hiram of Tyre, the Phoenician.

The Hebrew word מלך (melek, pronounced MEL-ek), is a noun meaning “king.” The verb form of the same word, malak, means “to rule,” as a king rules over his people. From MELEK comes the name of Mulek, the person who is most closely associated with the 600 BC replica in Montrose, Iowa. Thus, we call our ancient scent MELEK, The King.

We bring to the world a perfume from a tree that goes back in time to history’s earliest written records. Believers can now smell a fragrance that creates a memory that connects them to the Bible and to the House of the Lord.

This week Blaise Colasante will be at the workshop with David Snyder. We understand that Mike and Betty will travel in early June from Florida to the Nauvoo area. We will soon have the money to properly keep the project going. In mid-June we will be at the PHOENICIA Youth Week when there will be as many as two dozen young adults working on the ship.

We are getting the MELEK perfume ready for an introduction at the Annual Summer Convention of the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Clubs to be held in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 3 – 7. There should be as many as 1,500 people at that convention. The cultural association has 15,000 members in 22 states. Explorer Philip Beale is flying from England to Florida to participate in the Convention. We continue to work closely with the Chairman of the Association, Habib Ostra.

We are optimistic about the prospects for our summer activities. The scemt from our cedar logs will help fund the project. Let’s continue to move forward. We are sure that with your help we will find a way to keep us on course.

The Jewish community of Tunisia, and on the island of Djerba in particular, stretches back over 2,600 years. Jews are believed to have arrived in Tunisia with the Phoenicians, as early as the 10th century before Christ., who founded the ancient colony of Carthage on the northernmost tip of Africa. According to a popular legend of the Jewish community’s origins, a group of high priests (kohanim) arrived in Djerba having fled Jerusalem following the destruction of the ancient Temple in 586 BC In their flight, they salvaged a fragment of a door of the ancient Temple and brought it with them to Djerba. They reportedly preserved it as a relic in a grotto, or a cave, beneath what would become the Ghriba synagogue. This narrative directly links the foundation of the synagogue of the Temple in Jerusalem, the symbolic center of Judaism. Until the 1950s, Djerba was home to the largest Jewish community in Tunisia. Note the color blue that is associated with the Royal House of David and our MELEK PERFUME.

HRG History — by Jay Mackley
HISTORY AND MISSION STATEMENT OF THE

The Heartland Research Group is a grassroots, boots-on-the-ground organization that believes that the historical narrative of the Book of Mormon took place in the Heartland of North America. The HRG is active in archaeological research and in the acquisition, restoration and display of ancient American artifacts. The HRG is currently preparing an ancient ship replica called the "Phoenicia" for display. The ships construction design is patterned after a shipwreck dating to 600 BC. The Phoenicia ship made modern voyages, first around Africa and then also from the Middle East to Florida in 2019 – proving that voyages around Africa or from Sidon to North America were feasible anciently.

Heartland Research Inc is a 501c3 private operating foundation for archaeological research and to complete preparations for the Phoenicia display. Current plans are for a museum large enough to house the Phoenicia ship and many other ancient artifacts and exhibits from North America. The location of the museum is planned to be in Zarahemla which is Lee County Iowa, near the Mississippi river and east of Nauvoo, Illinois.

Our activities are too many to list, but some recent major expeditions are listed below. Many of these expeditions are open-ended and we expect to continue research in these and other similar activities as time, resources, and volunteers become available. We have dozens of volunteers and hundreds of donors, large and small, but we need many more. Check out the websites listed below for details of Heartland Research Group projects. Our current project is is our biggest yet: to refurbish the Phoenicia ship for display.
